Lucy, Lincoln and I spent the day at the High Desert Museum today; we had so much fun! It’s in Bend, Oregon – just about half an hour from our house.
Lucy and I just finished up a unit on habitats in home school, and this was a perfect way to learn more about the habitat we live in and the animals we share it with. We just started reading Little House in the Big Woods and the museum has a wonderful frontier homestead exhibit. I think it really helped bring the book to life for her. Lincoln was along for the ride but he had a great time too!
Checking out the trout (see it?)
A desert tortoise! He was VERY excited about it,
The kids favorite exhibit was definitely the homestead. It’s always been my favorite too, since I was a kid. They have a log cabin, root cellar, barn, garden, etc. all set up. It’s almost like stepping back in time. They have a water pump with lots of buckets and watering cans for the kids. There are people dressed up like historical characters that show the kids (in an easy going way) how to do things like beat a rug, wash clothes using a washboard and scrub the floor with scrub brushes!
Lincoln and Lucy LOVED “washing” clothes and hanging them up to dry.
This guy put Lincoln to work watering plants…
And scrubbing the porch…
We watched this guy use old time tools for woodworking. Dustin would have loved this if he was with us. He gave the kids little wood curls as he was working, just like I remember Laura playing with in one of the Little House on the Prairie books.
All in all a wonderful day, spent enjoying the beautiful area we live in.
If you’re ever in Bend, it’s definitely worth a stop!

A grand outing on a lovely day! So cute Amanda. Margie
